Current and Recent Projects
Since 2001, Port Gibson Main Street has made two significant financial commitments to this revitalization effort by acquiring and restoring two buildings in the downtown district: 621 Market Street (The Bakery Building) and 217 Walnut Street (the Bonnie's Nails Building).
The 621 Market Street property renovation was completed in 2002, sold to a private individual and is now an art gallery and artist studio.
The 217 Walnut Street property was donated to Port Gibson Main Street and the facade restoration and interior renovation was completed in 2005. We hope to sell this building for retail use and return it to the tax rolls.
Such projects are accomplished primarily through the use of traditional bank loan financing, limited grants and monies raised by Port Gibson Main Street through a number of activities including our annual Port Gibson Heritage Festival.
In 2006, both the City and County assisted us with the development of a greenspace park and a landscaping project in the central business district. Based on an agreement with the County Port Commission, Port Gibson Main Street will manage and assist with the marketing of a new multi-dealer antiques market.
